The winners of five adult or “non-traditional student” scholarships have been announced by the Coshocton Foundation.
Kelsey Steele was named the winner of the $2,000 Jones Metal Products Adult Legacy Scholarship for Coshocton County residents attending Central Ohio Technical College (COTC). Kelsey is attending COTC’s Coshocton Campus where she is majoring in Nursing.
Lisa Spillman was named winner of the Ruby S. Hawthorne Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. Lisa is attending Zane State seeking her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Accounting. The Hawthorne scholarship was established by Juliet Norris Lacy and Christyn Norris Kurtz in memory of their grandmother Ruby Hawthorne. Ms. Lacy and Ms. Kurtz assist in the selection of a winner each year.
Kenson Kanczuweski was the winner of the Beulah Brownfield Memorial Adult Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. Kenson attends The Ohio State University, where he is on a fast track to complete the classwork and internships required for a Master’s Degree in Social Work. This award was established through the Last Will & Testament of Mrs. Brownfield, who died in 1977.
Caitlin Wiseman was the winner of the George Leach Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. Caitlin is enrolled in Western Governors University and is pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Nursing. The American Legion Post 65 established the scholarship to honor George B. Leach and his military service to our nation during WWII and his record-setting Honor Guard participation with local veterans’ funerals in retirement. Adults who are veterans or on active duty may qualify for the scholarship. Caitlin served for 4 years on active duty in the Air Force and 3 years in the Air National Guard.
Joseph France was awarded the Kenneth F. Berry Memorial Adult Scholarship, which is renewable for a second year. The scholarship honors the memory of local attorney and former state senator Ken Berry. Joseph is attending Capella University seeking a Master’s Degree in Social Work.
In addition to the annual adult scholarships, Heaven Curtis was recently presented with the Harry C. Wilt Memorial EMS Grant, established by Mr. Wilt’s widow to honor his integral role in establishing the EMS program in Coshocton County, and his many years of dedicated community service. Heaven is attending Res1cue Fire 7 EMS Training in Zanesville in order to complete her Basic EMT coursework, while participating in clinical ride times and serving in the CCEMS auxillary.
In addition to these awards, the Coshocton Foundation is partnering with Central Ohio Technical College in the Coshocton Promise program, guaranteeing qualifying first-degree seeking Coshocton County residents free tuition through the Clarence and Grace Miller Scholarship Fund. On the high school level, the Coshocton Foundation awards more than 100 scholarships annually to graduating seniors of the area local high schools.
